Road Trip Calculator to help you determine if you should rent a car for your next road trip
The following rental car road trip calculator will help you determine if you could save money by renting a car to drive on a long trip instead of driving your own. It is common that renting a car might be cheaper on long trips because of better fuel economy or to avoid putting miles on your own car. For other reasons you might be better off driving a rental car see this article.
Before using this calculator, it is necessary that you calculate your driving cost per mile using the car cost mileage calculator (opens a new window). You will need to use the “driving cost” not the total cost.
Note: The total cost of driving your own car in this calculator takes into account depreciation, maintenance, the cost of new tires, and gasoline. It does not factor in the costs of insurance, interest on your car loan, tags, registration fees, or personal property taxes because these are fixed costs that do not increase due to you driving your car on a long trip.
