Good Deals on Tablet Computers
Tablet computers such as IPads and android tablet computers are the hottest item in the electronics industry because they are easy to use, portable, do as much computing as many people need, and fun. The IPad mini costs well over $300, and the full sized IPad costs even more, so those are out of my price range though.
Luckily there is another option to get a great tablet computer and right now there is a unique opportunity to get a deal that is even better than usual. But first, lets talk about a deal that isn’t nearly as good as it looks.
Generic Chinese Android Tablets- Not a good deal
About a year ago I found what looked like a good deal on an internet message board dedicated to discussing good deals. It was a Chinese android tablet with no brand name for about $60. The technical specs were as good as android tablets that cost hundred of dollars more and there were several positive reviews on this message board so I decided to give it a try.
At first I thought I had saved myself a lot of money but I soon found that I hadn’t gotten a good deal at all. Right out of the box, the generic tablet worked OK. It wasn’t super fast, but it was OK, and it could run any app I needed it to. After I loaded a few apps though I found that the tablet slowed down to the point it was frustrating to use. Worse, it broke after a few weeks. I didn’t drop it or anything, the screen just cracked all of the sudden for no reason.
The Chinese website I bought it from said it had a warranty, but the company refused to send me a new tablet or refund my money so I called my credit card company and complained. My credit card refunded my money, so I was able to learn that lesson for free. I won’t ever again buy cheap Chinese electronics.
Here’s how to get a real deal on a tablet computer.
The Nexus 7 Android Tablet
A few weeks ago I wrote about what a great deal the Nexus 4 phone is, and the Nexus 7 tablet is every bit as good a deal as it’s little brother. This isn’t a technical blog so I won’t go into the specs, but the Nexus 7 is everything you want in a tablet. It is fast, lightweight, powerful, doesn’t have all the junk apps you normally find on android devices, (See Nexus 4 article for explanation) and has a great battery life. It is better than most of the tablets on the market and comparible with the very top of the line tablets such as the IPad. At it’s original retail price of $200, it is a fraction of the cost of any other top of the line tablet on the market. When you compare it to the IPad mini for $330 it is a steal. Right now though, its an even better deal than usual.
In late July, Google released the 2nd generation of the Nexus 7. The 2nd generation is a little bit better than the 1st generation. The biggest difference I notice is it has a rear facing camera, so it is much better at taking pictures than the 1st generation. Other than that, the changes look pretty marginal to me. It is a little bit faster, a little bit lighter, a little bit thinner, and has a couple of minor features the 1st generation model doesn’t have such as wireless charging. The 2nd generation costs about $220, which makes it a very low price for perhaps the best tablet on the market. That is a very good deal that I would not hesitate to recommend making to anyone.
It’s not the 2nd generation that really excites me though, it is what has happened to the first generation that I am more interested in. In order to make way for the new version, the 1st generation Nexus 7 has gone on clearance. At the time this article was written, I could find a Nexus 7 on clearance for $150. So if you could can stand to have the 2nd best tablet on the market you can save an extra $50 on what was already the best deal out there. If you have been thinking about getting a tablet but were waiting for the right deal, I would jump on this right away.
