A recent article about standing desks generated a lot of interesting comments and questions from ABC readers, so it looks like this topic needs to be explored a little more. The idea that you can get just a little bit of exercise while still working at your computer is really appealing to office workers. While a standing desk is one way to do that, there are others as well. Here are some ideas you might want to try.
Ways to exercise while working
Exercise Ball for around $20 – This is what I use at my home office when writing these articles. The idea here is that while sitting on a round ball, you have to work a little bit to stay balanced which gives your core muscles a little bit of a workout. Does it work? Well the model I linked to above is rated 4.5 stars with over 1,000 reviews on Amazon which is pretty good for a piece of exercise equipment. Since I use one myself I can testify that a few hours on one of these and my core muscles feel like they have been worked out a little.
Desk Exercise Bike Pedal Exerciser for around $160- This set of pedals fits under your desk and allows you to slowly pedal as if you were on a bike while you work. Seems like a pretty simple idea to me, and this model is rated 4.5 stars on Amazon.
Standing Desk Treadmill for about $700- After reading the standing desk article, one reader asked me if the standing desk could be combined with a treadmill to get even more exercise. As it turns out, the answer is yes, but it isn’t cheap. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend paying this much for any exercise equipment. Used exercise equipment tends to be readily available for much lower prices because of all the people who buy the new equipment and then stop using it after just a few times.
A treadmill like this that works with a standing desk might be a little harder to find because they are fairly rare, but if you really want one I’d recommend searching on Craigslist once a week and if you are lucky eventually a used one with a fair price will show up.
