How to get home telephone service for $5/ month
Although more and more people every month and dropping home telephone service completely in favor of cell phones for other people this is simply not practical. Some people still need a landline for a variety of reasons. The good news is that the same technology that has made it practical for some people to abandon the home telephone also make it dirt cheap for those that can’t.
Republic Wireless is the ridiculously cheap cell phone service that scores of ABC readers have been signing up for to save a lot of money every month. Republic Wireless is able to offer cell phone service for such cheap prices because their phones work different from traditional phones.
While the traditional cell phone networks are the backup that Republic Wireless phones use when a wifi network isn’t available, Republic Wireless phones primarily use whatever existing wifi network you are connected to not only access the internet, but also place phone calls and send text messages. They have gone through several generations of this technology and have perfected it as of November of 2013 when they released the Moto X which makes calls that are just as clear as the best traditional cell phone or landline.
They have recently released a cheaper phone called the Moto G ($150) which combined with their $5/month unlimited calling, texting and data plan makes for a dirt cheap home phone service for those that have high speed internet in their homes.
The unlimited calling and texting plan for $5/ month
The $5/ month plan allows for unlimited calling, texting, and data when your phone is attached to a wifi network, but your phone won’t work on traditional cell phone networks when you are out and about. (There is a way around that, more on that later). As a cell phone plan, this plan doesn’t excite me too much because who wants a cell phone that doesn’t work away from home?
As a home phone plan though, this is awesome! In addition to being a home phone, you can also take it with you if you choose and use it other places that have wifi, such as your office or restaurants/hotel rooms when you are traveling.
What’s the Catch
There is no catch, this plan is nothing but saving money every single month.
The other great thing about this plan is that it is very flexible and allows you to convert your home phone into a cell phone with America’s best cell phone plan at a moments notice with no fees. Republic Wireless allows you to change plans twice per month at no charge. That means you can leave your phone at home for 50 weeks out of the year, change to a cell phone plan for 2 weeks while you go on vacation so you can make and receive calls from your home phone while you are on the road, then change back to the $5/ month home phone plan when you get home.
When you are using your phone as a cell phone, Republic Wireless offers what I believe to be the America’s best cell phone network. When wifi isn’t available, Republic Wireless uses the Sprint cell phone network. When Sprint isn’t available, Republic Wireless uses the Verizon cell phone network which is the network with the best coverage by leaps and bounds above everyone else. So basically you take the best cell phone network and add to it wifi for places such as basements and extreme rural areas that have no cell phone coverage and there you have the Republic Wireless network.
In addition, Republic Wireless will also work overseas wherever you can find a wifi network. Other companies charge huge roaming charges, or make you go find another sim card for your phone, but with Republic Wireless, it is all included in your plan.
The cell phone plans
In addition to the $5/month unlimited wifi plan here are the cell phone plans that Republic Wireless offers:
$10 per month unlimited calling and texting- Your phone will work on a cell phone network for unlimited calling and texting, but will only get data when you are on wifi. This is the plan for those people who want to use their phone primarily as a phone. This is the plan my wife is on.
$25 per month unlimited calling, texting, and 3G data- Your phone will work on a cell phone network for unlimited calling, texting, and will also receive 3G data when on a cell phone network. This is the plan I am on with my Moto X. 3G data is fine for receiving emails, using GPS navigation, running apps, and doing a little light browsing. However, if you want to do a lot of web surfing when you are not on a wifi network I think you would be happier with the 4G plan. The Moto G only works on 3G data, so there is no need for a more expensive plan if that is your phone.
$40 per month unlimited calling, texting, and 4G data- This is the Cadillac of cell phone plans that gives you unlimited everything at high speeds. There are a couple of drawbacks to the 4G plan, though. For one thing, the Moto G, doesn’t work on 4G, so you will have to shell out $300 for the more expensive Moto X phone. Secondly, you only get Sprint 4G, not Verizon 4G. The Sprint network is limited, so you should not expect to get 4G in rural areas. When you are not on the Sprint 4G network you will be using Verizon 3G.
How much can you save?
Home phone service can easily cost you $40 per month. How much can you save with the Republic Wireless $5/month plan? Lets assume that your Moto G phone will last you 2 years. If you are always leaving it home then there won’t be much wear and tear on it so I am guess it might last much more than 2 years, but we will say 2 years to be conservative. If you buy the Moto G for $150 and then spend $5/ month for service that will cost you a total of $270 over 2 years which works out to $11.25 per month.
How much does regular home telephone service cost? You can probably find a telephone pretty cheap somewhere even at a garage sale if you are willing to buy a used one, so lets assume a home phone is free, and all you pay is the $40/ month service fee. Over 2 years, that $40/ month will add up to $960! With Republic Wireless you can save $690 over a two year period which amounts to $28.75 per month in savings.
