How to save money on KCups

A lot of people of people like to make coffee with a Keurig coffee maker.  In addition to making great coffee (So I have been told, I don’t drink it myself) it is also convenient because it allows you to make one cup at a time instead of having to brew a whole pot.  The problem is that the KCups that are used in the Keurig machines are expensive.  Here is how to save money on KCups.

Reader questions

Following my last article on saving money on coffee, I got this email from Brittney:

Hi!  I read the article you wrote about saving money at Starbucks.  I’m getting married next yr and we are trying to save up, but I love coffee from Starbucks!  It’s  hard to not go at all but I think I can manage to have my coffee at home a few times a week since your calculator told me I could save around $500 per year by not going to Starbucks twice a week.

I have a Keurig coffee maker for home, but it is kind of expensive cuz of the cost of the Kcups. But it does make the fancy coffee drinks which i love!… So in order to save money, can i I keep my Keurig machine or should I buy a machine that takes regular ground coffee? Thanks,

Brittney

P.S.  I also did your car refinance calcutator and im saving over a $1,000 a yr just for refinancing my car.  Super excited about that!!!

A cheaper way to use KCups

The good news for Brittney and others that love their Keurig machines is that you don’t have to give up your KCups.  Amazon has these Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter for sale that cost $8.  Using these refillable cups, you don’t have to buy the expensive KCups every time you make a cup of coffee.  Instead you buy regular ground coffee and simply put your ground coffee into these refillable cups. Bittney can even get the Starbucks Coffee House Blend, Ground, 12 oz she likes so much at a fraction of what it would cost at a coffee shop.  Because regular ground coffee costs so much less per pound than a K Cup you can spend a lot less money this way.

How much can you save?

Since Brittney likes calculators so much, here is a calculator to show how much money you could save by using refillable K Cups:

I am also cheap, and when I used a Keurig at work, I used one of those re-useable filters too. But sometimes I splurged on a box at my local Bed Bath and Beyond — some of the K-Cups had manufacturer’s coupons, and I could combine it with a BBB 20% off coupon!

Cool. Would you recommend the re-useable filters? Do they work as well as the K-Cups?
