Driving cost mileage calculator
This article is to announce that the Art of Being Cheap has developed an free mileage calculator to calculate the cost of owning and operating a car per mile driven. The calculator can be found here. You can use this calculator to calculate driving cost, which you would use if you were making a decision such as which new car to buy or evaluating whether you should keep your old car or buy a new one. You can also use it to evaluate the cost of driving the car you already have. You would use this number for such decisions as should you drive vs fly, drive your car versus renting a car, or simply calculating how much a driving trip will cost you.
Many years ago I was trying to decide whether or not I should buy a hybrid car. When I was making this decision I was frustrated when I did web searches and was unable to find any kind of calculator that would tell me how much a Toyota Prius would cost me versus another car. I found many people’s opinion on whether or not you should purchase a hybrid car, but most of the people voicing these opinions had clearly not done any actual math and I wanted to know what my actual cost would be.
So I wrote a spreadsheet to make that calculation and I have shared that spreadsheet with many of my friends and coworkers over the last couple of years. Now that I have my own website, I am very excited that I can provide this calculator to everybody for free.
This calculator will be used often in future articles when we discuss ways to cut transportation costs or evaluate whether cars with the newest fuel saving technology are really worth the money.
