10 things you should buy in bulk
In the past, we have talked about why you should buy in bulk. and created a calculator to help you figure out which bulk food purchase is the best deal. This week’s article is less about theory, and more about exactly what you can buy in large quantities to save you money.
To figure this out, I looked at the prices of a bunch of items you probably buy several times a year. I looked at the price of the small size of those items at my local walmart, then compared those prices to both a larger size at walmart, and buying in bulk at Amazon. Here are the top 10 items I found that can save you money buying in bulk:
#10 Diapers- Save 16%
If you are looking for Huggies snug and dry size 1 diapers, the package with 120 diapers will cost you $22.94 which is $.19 per diaper. At Amazon, you can buy 276 diapers for $44.49, which is only $.16 per diaper, a savings of 16%. Also, man am I glad I don’t have to buy diapers anymore!
#9 Shampoo- Save 16%
You can buy 13.5 ounces of Walmart’s most popular shampoo for $2.97 ($.22/ ounce) or 29.2 ounces for $5.37 ($.18/ ounce). The bigger size will save you 16%.
#8 Salsa- Save 21%
You can get 24 ounces of salsa for $2.68 or ($.11/ounce). If you love chips and salsa as much as I do you will want to get 64 Oz for $5.68 ($.09/ ounce) from Amazon and save yourself 21%.
#7 Rice- Save 25%
There are countless varieties of rice, so just for the sake of this article I looked at basmati rice, which will cost you $4.37 for 32 ounces ($.14/ ounce). Or you can get 10 pounds for $16.28 ($.10/ ounce) to save yourself 25%. I’ll admit that 10 lbs is a lot of rice, but if you want to eat for cheap there are lots of delicious recipes that use rice such as red beans and rice or jambalaya.
#6 Chili seasoning- Save 31%
Cooler weather is almost here, which means it’s chili season. Until recently I was buying those individual packets of 1.25 oz of chili seasoning for $.98 ($.78/ oz). Now I know that buying 22-Ounce for 11.82 ($.53/oz) is a better deal by 31%.
#5 Soap- Save 32%
Your going to use that soap eventually so why buy 3 bars of Irish Spring soap for $2.21 ($.74/bar) when you could get 16 bars for $7.96 ($.50/bar)? That will save you 32%.
#4 Nuts- Save 44%
Almost all nuts are better bought in bulk. As one example, 6 ounces of pistachios will cost you $5.76 ($.96/ ounce). If you go big at Amazon, you can get 32 Ounces for $17.31 ($.54/ ounce) and save yourself 44%.
#3 Pasta- Save 45%
A 14.5 ounce box of spaghetti will run you $1.98 ($.14/ ounce) or a bigger box with 32 ounces of spaghetti will cost you $2.42 ($.08) ounce, a savings of 45%. By the way, you can see at $.08/ ounce that pasta makes pretty cheap meal if you are trying to cut your grocery budget.
#2 Paper plates- Save 52%
#1 Taco Seasoning- Save 76%
The king of buying in bulk savings was taco seasoning, which is good because tacos are delicious! Just like chili, I used to buy the individual packets for $.78 with 1 ounce of chili powder. I know buy the 24 ounce packages for $4.48 ($.19/ ounce). That will save you 76%. Muy Bueno!

I once heard a saying that if you want to find the right answer on the internet, asking the question is a waste of time. The way to get the right answer is to post the wrong one. With that in mind let me see if I can get a few comments this way:
This list is comprehensive and represents the only 10 items you can save money on by buying in bulk. While a comment section below exists, I see no reason why you should use it. Good day.
